Psalms 37:4 Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.
The word “delight” means, “To affect with great pleasure or to please highly.” Often when this verse is discussed the general topic of the conversation or preaching is that if we just love God He will give us whatever we want. It has been used to teach the “Health, Wealth, and Prosperity” theology. I believe this does a great disservice to the Scripture.
1. I am to delight in THE LORD. Notice what the verse actually says, “Delight thyself also in the LORD…” The central theme of this verse is that the LORD is to be our delight. Our focus must be on HIM not on the objects of our desire. I should not want things, I should want HIM! When we learn to delight in HIM all around us fades into obscurity.
How am I to delight in the LORD? It must be the LORD that gives me great pleasure.
- Mary of Bethany delighted in the LORD and worshipped Him while others were “careful and troubled about many things.”
- Paul and Silas delighted in the LORD and prayed and sang praises unto Him while the prisoners of sin listened.
Circumstances may be difficult. People may oppose me. My health may be bad. The finances may be short and the world may persecute me, but my delight is still in the LORD!
2. Delight in the Word of God
Psalm 1:2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.
Psalm 119:47 And I will delight myself in thy commandments, which I have loved.
Psalm 119:77 Let thy tender mercies come unto me, that I may live: for thy law is my delight.
Psalm 119:174 I have longed for thy salvation, O LORD; and thy law is my delight.
Romans 7:22 For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:
Because David delighted in the LORD he also delighted in the Word of God. Do you take great pleasure in God telling you what to do in the Bible?
3. Delight to do His Will
Psalm 40:8 I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart.
Psalm 143:10 Teach me to do thy will; for thou art my God: thy spirit is good; lead me into the land of uprightness.
Because David delighted in the LORD and delighted in the Word of God, he wanted to do the WILL of God. The direction of your life and the path you travel WILL be determined by that in which you delight. Do you delight in the LORD?
